Home Improvement Planner

Which Home Improvement Should You Tackle First?

Compare three potential improvements, organise your budget and identify what needs attention first—without assuming that separate energy-savings estimates can simply be added together.

✓ Compare Costs✓ Separate Urgent Repairs✓ Prepare a Practical Next Step

Your Home Improvement Plans

Enter your own quotations or working estimates. We do not insert fabricated savings or grant awards. Urgent safety repairs should be assessed regardless of apparent financial payback.

Money you could realistically allocate, not a borrowing recommendation.
Set a contingency for uncertain quotes and unexpected work.

Savings fields are optional. If you don't have a credible estimate, leave them blank. This tool does not validate third-party quotes or calculate whole-house combined savings.

Priorities & Budget Overview

Available After Contingency—Your stated budget minus cash set aside
Cost of Selected Projects—Combined entered project costs, not future savings
Budget Gap or Headroom—Gap means more funds or phased choices needed
Projects with Savings Estimates—Figures not combined because measures can overlap

Suggested Review Order

Safety and Suitability Come First

Unsafe electrics, structural defects, fire hazards, major damp problems and unsafe windows need competent professional assessment. A savings estimate cannot override safety.

What To Do Next

Compare itemised quotations, understand the necessary surveys, check actual funding eligibility and consider how improvements interact.

1Check Safety & EPC
2Collect Written Quotes
3Confirm Grants & Constraints
4Sequence Work with Specialists

Compare, Don't Add Savings

Insulation, heat pumps, windows and solar panels can affect the same energy use. The predicted yearly benefit from one improvement may change after another is installed. This tool never adds separate savings into a guaranteed whole-home total.

Consider the Order of Work

Start with urgent safety defects and appropriate surveys, then consider building fabric, heating, generation and storage in context. The right order depends on your home and planned work; a qualified assessment may be necessary.

How This Planner Works — Assumptions and Limitations

All costs, savings, available funds and contingency amounts are user-entered. This tool does not fetch individual calculator results, allocate actual grants, determine eligibility, or calculate financial return on a set of improvements. A blank estimate means unknown—not zero annual savings.

Suggested review order gives priority to explicitly labelled urgent safety works, then time-sensitive repairs and improvements, followed by normal planned projects. It is a triage guide, not automated financial optimisation. Budget comparison counts all selected project costs, without automatically discarding an unaffordable urgent repair. Safety and urgent work should be considered regardless of the budget calculation.

Separate heating-bill reductions can overlap or become invalid if the home's heating equipment changes. Do not add their individual savings together; obtain a whole-house assessment for packages of measures. Financing, VAT circumstances, permissions, surveys, disruption, grants, and contingencies can change actual budgets. Seek appropriate certified professional advice for electrical, structural, gas, fire, ventilation, damp and building-regulations matters.
